Our Manufacturing Facility
We established Australia’s first sodium cyanide manufacturing facility in 1988 to meet the growing demand for sodium cyanide in metallurgical gold extraction in Western Australia (WA). Previously, the industry relied on imported packaged sodium cyanide.
Our manufacturing facility plant is located at our CSBP industrial chemicals and fertiliser complex in Kwinana, and is capable of producing up to 64,000 tonnes of sodium cyanide every year, with potential to expand to 80,000 tonnes.
After the manufacturing process, we transport the sodium cyanide solution in specially-designed portable containers (ISO-tainers) by rail or road to mine sites throughout Australia and internationally. Solid briquette sodium cyanide is packed in one tonne intermediate bulk containers (IBCs) and exported internationally in 20 tonne sea containers.
Innovative design
Our plant is recognised for its innovative design, efficiency and safety, and has won several awards for engineering excellence, including:
- 1989 Plant of the Year – Society of Chemical Industry of Victoria
- 1990 Institution of Engineers (Australia) WA award for distinction in Engineering Achievement - Manufacturing Facility (Awarded to AGR and Shedden Pacific Pty Ltd)
Its design features a wastewater recycling and treatment system, designed to have no negative impact on the environment.
Solid sodium cyanide production
In 2002, we established our solid sodium cyanide production facility to service our export markets and those Australian markets where it isn’t economical to supply the cyanide solution.
We use the cyanide solution to produce the solid product in three steps:
- Evaporate the moisture to form a slurry.
- Dry the slurry and compact it into briquettes.
- Package the product into ISO-tainers or intermediate bulk containers (IBCs).
