History
Since 1988, CSBP Limited has been manufacturing and distributing solution
sodium cyanide in a joint venture with Coogee Chemicals Pty Ltd. This joint venture, in which CSBP Limited has a 75% interest, is known as Australian Gold Reagents Pty Ltd or AGR.
Solution sodium cyanide is
safely transported by road and rail in specially built isotainers to gold mining companies for use in the gold extraction process.
In late 2002, CSBP Limited and Coogee Chemicals Pty Ltd heralded another era in the history of their sodium cyanide business with the commissioning of a solid sodium cyanide production plant.
Key points in sodium cyanide production
- AGR commenced production and supply of sodium cyanide solution in 1988
- AGR undertook an exhaustive review of sodium cyanide technology
- AGR ultimately licensed technology from Rohm GmbH, manufacturers of hydrogen cyanide
- Rohm and Udhe designed a new absorption stage of the process to convert hydrogen cyanide to sodium cyanide
- Rohm process (Andrussow) chosen due to:
- Safety and Environment
- Efficiency
- Reputation
- Original capacity was 15,000 tonnes per annum as 100% sodium cyanide
- Debottlenecked to 32,000 tonnes per annum as 100% sodium cyanide
- Duplicate plant commissioned in 1998
- Present capacity 63,000 tonnes per annum as 100% sodium cyanide
- From 2002; includes conversion of 33,000tpa to solid sodium cyanide in briquette form.
