Environment

At CSBP, we strive to be a leader in environmental care and follow a comprehensive environmental management program across all of our operations.

We have developed a number of environmental solutions and are involved in a range of initiatives. Some of our current and most recent projects and achievements include:

Research and development

Wastewater management

  • We are developing a five-year wastewater management strategy to reduce our effluent and contaminant production at all of our sites.

  • Our nitrogen-stripping wetland in Kwinana is the first of its kind in Australia. Recently, we expanded it to further reduce the levels of nitrogen in wastewater from our chemical production process. The wetland sand and gravel contain naturally-occurring bacteria that convert nitrogen into nitrogen gas, which is then released into the atmosphere.
  • We use treated wastewater from the Kwinana Water Reclamation Plant to reduce our use of scheme and ground water.
  • We have commissioned a water recycling plant in Laverton developed by CSBP subsidiary, Australian Vinyls. The recycling process is designed to recover water efficiently, using little energy and minimal labour.

Employee and community awareness

  • We communicate openly with our staff about our environmental initiatives.

  • As an active member of the Kwinana Community and Industries Forum, we initiate consultation on a range of environmental issues.

  • As part of our commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, we’re participating in the commonwealth government's Greenhouse Challenge.

We have also received national recognition for our water management strategies, with two major awards in 2007:
